Background:
The origins of the school can be traced to 1587; at its current location for 35 years; situated in pleasant semi-rural location, surrounded by Roman monuments of considerable historical significance, a golf course and the meanders of the river Usk. There are four main teaching blocks, several playing fields, a floodlit Astroturf pitch and a nature reserve. A new technology block was opened in 2000 and an additional 16-classroom block, four new tennis courts and resurfaced yards completed in December 2004. The school has two choirs and five instrumental ensembles, and in 2003 their senior orchestra received the ultimate accolade when it brought the 2003 schools proms season to a finale at the Royal Albert Hall. Success at sport is impressive; there is extensive participation and teams regularly gain success at national level and each year; several students represent Wales. An average of £7,000 is raised and donated to various charities; active school council. Over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place. Investor in People status (2003). Ethos: 'A culture of high expectation pervades all aspects of school life. Under-achievement is quickly identified and challenged. It is a well-disciplined but happy and very caring school community'.
